WORLD WATER DAY IN ABENOLENG RIVER

Date Posted: 2009-04-27
Posted by: ''

The Municipality of Sison, through the full endorsement of Mayor Kimi, joined the synchronized celebration of World Water Day 2009 program by cleaning the Abenoleng River from Barangay Pinmilapil to Bulaoen West on April 21, 2009. Almost all of the twenty eight barangays were represented except for Barangay Inmalog whose leaders and residents chose to clean the Antong River. Several groups from the Non-Government (NGOs) and government sectors, particularly the members of the Sanggunian Bayan, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), the Sanggunian Kabataan (SK), the ABC, Asosasyon ng mga Barangay Kagawad (ABAKA), BAS, Civilian Volunteer Organizations (CVOs), the Sison Police Force and the municipal employees representing their respective offices, took so much fun in plunging into the lily infested river – retrieving all kinds of wastes that are contributory to its pollution and clogging.

Passing by Barangay Pinmilapil, members of the Irrigators and Farmers Association were also seen dredging and cleaning their irrigation canals as another version of their participation to the synchronized program.

The Abenoleng River is considered as the town’s major source of “kiwet” (freshwater eels), which one honorable city dad wolfs with great gusto because of its superb taste and his conviction that it has a rejuvenating quality. The “kiwet” is also a good luck fish if caught because it brings good turn to the barangay captain who brings it directly to him.

The activity was merely a precedent set for the residents to follow. “The Black Curse” , an article authored by Mayor Kimi, is a direct and blatant criticism on our continued defiance of the law and direct assault to nature. We became too engrossed in mastering the arts of living and existence but we fail to learn the basics and turned oblivious of the deadly traces that we leave behind that, oftentimes, they ricochet to our defeat.
