The presence of typhoon Cosme was already felt in the afternoon of May 17, 2008 when Avocado fruits started to fall and trees started to sway in erratic motion that also alarmed cattle in the fields to bellow for their youngs. At around seven o’clock in the evening, typhoon Cosme slapped everything in its path with thundering blows of winds – uprooting gigantic mango and acacia trees. Electric posts fell, high tension wires snapped and everything became obscure. Big tree branches and GI roofs swirled in midair that buses, trucks and cars became the vulnerable targets - triggering the motorists to panic.
It was only at about eleven o’clock in the evening when typhoon Cosme’s fury started to abate and left the following morning but not without a catastrophic aftermath. Several houses were blown and shredded to the ground that did not spare the two storey house of Punong Barangay Manuel L. Esteban, Sr. of Barangay Sagunto. Current report of the extent of damages in the town of Sison alone on government buildings and facilities is four million and fifty thousand pesos (P4,050,000.00); on public schools is thirteen million and one hundred eighty five thousand pesos (P13,185,000.00) and on roads and bridges is six hundred fifty thousand pesos (P650,000.00). Current record of damaged dwellings also shows that there are three hundred twenty four (324) totally damaged and two thousand and twenty (2,020) partially damaged. Amount of damages on dwellings is not yet established due to ongoing inspection being conducted by the Engineering Office. Report on agri and livestock damages is also not yet disclosed.
