HIGH DEP-ED OFFICIALS CASTIGATED FOR SIDESTEPPING SISON

“Let’s not waste money on pigpens!”…MOC July 8, 2008 – Officials from the Department of Education headed by Dr. Ligaya T. Miguel, Dep-Ed Regional Directress and Atty. Armando M. Aquino, Dep-Ed Division Superintendent, were severely reprimanded during a meeting held at the Office of the Mayor in Sison with the Pangasinan 5th District Representative, Hon. Mark O. Cojuangco, Mayor Kimi S. Cojuangco, Board Member Danilo C. Uy and ABONO’s Engr. Rosendo So. It can be recalled that immediately after the rage of typhoon Cosme that toppled down almost all schools of the municipality of Sison, the Mayor plunged into mud soaked streets to knock on doors of friends for assistance - not sparing the doors of the Malaca?ang. After numerous meetings and the Mayor’s persistent stance, Her Excellency, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, finally noticed the urgency of the Mayor’s call. The President facilitated the immediate release of ample amount of money through the Department of Education for the rehabilitation of schools in Sison but two months have gone past there was no action taken except a few makeshift rooms that will not last longer than the time spent in building them. The report of the Dep-Ed officials during PGMA’s visit in Lingayen, saying that eighty percent of all schools have been rehabilitated, got a negative outburst from the Honorable Mayor that created confusion in front of a live TV coverage. The Mayor showed the President day old pictures of tattered school buildings in Sison that are still in their very precarious states that also imperils hundreds of school children which the President wholly believed that put the Dep-Ed officials in a very tight jam. In the course of the meeting, the Honorable Congressman bared his blatant abhorrence to the inefficiency of the Dep-Ed officials who were very apologetic and wanted to make immediate amends with the Congressman and the Mayor. “We have here now with us our engineers to fast track the restoration of the school buildings in Sison,” the Division Superintendent assured. “Let’s not waste money on pigpens! Let me remind you that there are specific standards in constructing classrooms in my district, the seven meters by nine meters should be followed.” The Congressman retorted. “I am presently designing rafters that are heavy duty and economical. The people are the customers and customers must be satisfied. I stand at the middle between the people and the government!” he added. “I am the Mayor and I am in the frontline!” Mayor Kimi butted in. “The thing that I did is nothing personal. It’s my job. If that’s going to happen again, I won’t hesitate to do it another time because I am not doing this for my personal gain but for my constituents. It wouldn’t have gotten this big but I had no choice.” The Mayor continued. At the meet’s end, the Honorable Congressman quipped, “Can I shake your hands in a personal level because I don’t want to create bad blood between us!” which the Dep-Ed officials gladly accepted.
